Welcome to your first year at Chicago-Kent! We look forward to assisting you in reaching your career goals.

According to guidelines adopted by the National Association of Legal Professionals (NALP), to which Chicago-Kent College of Law as well as all other ABA-accredited law schools subscribe, 1Ls cannot meet individually with a career services advisor until October 15th and cannot initiate contact with or interview with certain prospective employers until December 1st. However, there are still many things you can do to start planning for your future career.

2Ls and 3Ls - Make an Appointment!

Make an appointment to meet with your career advisor to discuss your recent summer experience, job search status and plans for the Fall 2017 semester. Your career advisor can also show you new updates on many tools to assist you with networking, professional development, and career planning as an upper level law student. Please bring your most recent, updated legal resume with you to your meeting with your career advisor.

Each 2L and 3L student is required to meet with his or her assigned career advisor by the end of the Fall semester. Get a head start and make your appointment today!

Interview Preparation and Mock Interviews Available Through the CSO

The Career Services Office is available to review student resumes and cover letters, and to conduct mock interviews, to help you better prepare for a variety of opportunities! If you have an upcoming interview, please consider scheduling a mock interview with your Career Services counselor. You can schedule an appointment directly through Symplicity! Free ABA Memberships for Students

The American Bar Association offers free memberships to all students enrolled in law school. The membership grants law students access to resources tailored to their interests and needs, opportunities to build their professional skills plus access to the ABA’s job listings, clerkships, internships and career events.

Community Based Federal Work Study Available for Fall 2017 - Applications accepted on a rolling basis

Chicago-Kent has Community-Based Federal Work Study available during Fall 2017. Chicago-Kent students who are Federal Work Study eligible may be paid though Federal Work Study funds to work at government and public interest organizations outside of the law school. Please visit the Chicago-Kent Community-Based Federal Work Study webpage for a more detailed explanation of this opportunity, as well as the form you need to complete in order to participate. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis for any Fall start after August 22, 2017; processing time may take a week or more; allow plenty of time for approval of your application, and the time it takes to be added to the Chicago-Kent payroll. Mentor a Legal Prep High School Student in 2017-18

Legal Prep Charter Academy is currently seeking mentors for its 2017-18 mentoring program. Mentors work with an individual student on a monthly basis. Legal Prep plans the programming centered around college and career readiness and transports students to the meeting location. Mentors are also welcome and encouraged to meet with students outside of the monthly meetings. The program is a great opportunity to influence the life of a high school student at Legal Prep and to serve as a role model for youth on the west side of Chicago. Our students highly respect and value their relationships with their mentors. The program meets the first Thursday of the month from 4pm-6pm, typically at the Chicago Bar Association. Race Judicata 5K

Race Judicata is a 5k run/walk to benefit Chicago Volunteer Legal Services (CVLS), an organization of over 2,300 volunteer attorneys who donate free legal services to thousands of low-income Chicagoans. This event provides for a great networking opportunity for a great cause in a relaxed, social environment; last year, 255 teams were registered from Chicago area law firms, public interest organizations, and legal services companies. The SEC is seeking bright, innovative, results-oriented individuals for its Spring and Summer 2018 Student Honors Program in its 11 regional offices. They offer law students robust responsibilities and experiences that enhance their legal careers. Over the course of the semester based program, students work with Commission staff on projects particular to the specific Division or Office to which they are assigned. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in seminars/workshops, roundtable discussions, a mentoring program, and tours that will provide detailed information and guidance on securities laws.

Faegre Baker Daniels 2L Diversity & Inclusion Fellowship
- Application Now Available

Faegre Baker Daniels invites second-year law students committed to contributing meaningfully to diversity and inclusion in the legal profession to apply for its 2018 Diversity & Inclusion Fellowship program.

The firm offers up to four Fellowships annually that provide professional experience and mentorship to second-year law students from populations historically underrepresented in the legal profession.

Applicants for the Diversity Fellowship must be enrolled in a J.D. program at an accredited U.S. law school with an anticipated graduation date of 2019.

Sidley has long been one of the most prominent and progressive proponents of law firm diversity. Through the leadership of its Diversity Committee and Committee on Retention and Promotion of Women, Sidley is working to become a more diverse and inclusive organization.

To further promote diversity within the legal profession and to support Sidley’s diversity policies, the firm created the Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship Initiative for second year law students. Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) Fellowships and Scholarships - Fall 2017 applications now available!

Applications are now being accepted for PILI Law Student Internships during the 2017 Fall Semester. Each year, PILI offers a limited number of school-year Internships in Chicago during the fall and spring semesters to second and third-year law students. Please note, PILI’s stipend for fall interns has increased from $2,500 to $3,000, less applicable taxes, for 200 hours of work.

2017 Ernst & Young Tax Professional of the Year Competition - Applications due September 8, 2017

Ernst & Young is excited to announce that it is once again hosting the Young Tax Professional of the Year (YTPY) Competition for 3L JD students and incoming Tax LLM students. YTPY is a 2-step competition – first, here in the Americas at the regional level and then in Amsterdam at the global level.

For the Americas competition, EY is using the theme – Bold Disruption! Students are asked to submit responses to a case study, which focuses on international tax problem solving. Responses are due Friday, September 8. Students with the top responses will advance to an orals competition in late September in New York City (travel expenses will be paid by EY).

The winner of the Americas competition will advance to the global competition, which will take place in late November (travel expenses will be paid by EY).

Global competition winners are recognized at three levels: 1st prize—a 30-day, round-the-world business trip that includes “working visits” to key EY tax centers in London, New York, Washington, D.C., and Hong Kong; 2nd prize—a 10-day visit to one of EY’s tax centers; and 3rd prize—an invitation to take part in one of EY’s exceptional global client conferences, where you have the opportunity to network with many of our leadership partners and most valued clients.

Skadden Fellowship - Applications Due September 18

The Skadden foundation will award two-year Fellowships for 2018 law school graduates and outgoing judicial law clerks who want to work in the public interest. Grants are made to organizations only, not to individuals. Therefore, before the application date of September 18, all applicants must identify a sponsoring public interest organization. The sponsor must be a 501(c)(3) organization that provides civil legal services to the poor, including the working poor, the elderly, the disabled or those deprived of their civil or human rights.

An Advisory Committee, comprised of a dozen partners from all of Skadden's U.S. offices, works closely with Susan Butler Plum, director of the Fellowship Program, to administer the program and select each year's Fellows. Selection is based on a variety of factors, including the qualifications of the applicant (competency, academic performance, character and demonstrated commitment to the public interest), the demonstrated effectiveness of the sponsoring organization, the quality of the proposed project and the worthiness of the project's goals.

From the large number of applications, the committee will identify approximately 100 semifinalists, each of whom will be invited for an in-person interview. From this group, 56 finalists are presented in mid-November to the Selection Trustees: seven individuals from outside the firm, Skadden's executive partner, two of counsel at the firm and one second-year Fellow. Those applicants receiving a Fellowship will be notified by November 17.

Finalists will be announced on October 18, 2017. After that date, if any finalist is presented with another opportunity or receives a Fellowship offer from another organization, we encourage you to contact us. Skadden Fellows, once awarded a Fellowship, cannot receive any other fellowship funds or prize monies for the two-year duration of the Skadden Fellowship.

2018 Equal Justice Works Fellowship for 3Ls -
Applications due September 27, 2017

Equal Justice Works Fellows have represented thousands of adults, children and families in need in communities across the country. Fellows design unique projects that serve and address a range of legal issues including domestic violence, homelessness, community economic development, immigration, civil rights, juvenile justice, employment rights, health care, consumer fraud, and environmental justice. Equal Justice Works then matches the Fellow with sponsors to support their projects.

Fellows receive a competitive salary, generous loan repayment assistance, connections to their prominent sponsors, a multi-day Leadership Development Training in Washington, D.C., and access to the Equal Justice Works network of public interest advocates.

Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair - October 27 & 28, 2017 - Register and apply for interviews now

The Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair is the largest national public interest legal career fair in the country. More than 165 public interest employers from across the country conduct interviews for internships and full-time jobs and meet with students in informal “table talk” discussions of public interest legal opportunities. Click here for the latest list. The deadline to register is Wednesday, September 13; but students can APPLY NOW for interviews. Interview spots are filled on a rolling basis.

In addition to the Career Fair, there are some great conference programs and the featured speaker is U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair will take place on October 27 & 28 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott, 1700 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, VA.

One of the biggest barriers to attending the Conference & Career Fair is affording the trip to DC so this year, EJW is helping students connect for carpooling and hotel sharing and the first 500 registered students will qualify for a chance to receive one of ten $100 travel stipends.

ABA Law Student Podcast: Public Service Loan Forgiveness

If you plan to go into public service, you may have heard about public service loan forgiveness (PSLF for short). This economic incentive offers student loan forgiveness following a minimum period of service and on-time payments towards the borrower’s debt. The cost of this benefit is aimed at making public work more attractive.

In this extended two-segment episode of ABA Law Student Podcast, hosts Fabiani Duarte and Madison Burke interview Bryan Tyson, the executive director of the Georgia Public Defender Council and Jonathan Rapping, co-founder of Gideon’s Promise.

In segment one, you will hear from Bryan about the debt to income gap, his organization’s survey of public defenders about PSLF, and the increased importance of public defenders outside the practice of law.

In segment two, you will hear from Jonathan about student debt’s barrier to public service, the lifelong commitment of student loans, and concerns about poor people not getting justice in the event of PSLF cuts or caps.
